| The idea that there may be intelligent life outside of our little galaxy is a
fascinating prospect with many possibilities. Of course, it is possible that the "extra-terrestrials"
may not be friendly, if they are anything like us that is entirely possible, but that is a chance we
take by being here. SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) Institute are continually
searching the skies for evidence of planets that could contain Intelligent life and SETI@Home enables
them to do this. SETI@Home is a small package which downloads a unit of data and analyses this data
in the background of your PC. There are millions of users (although unfortunately not all are active)
and this enables SETI to collate the results quickly and effectively. All the data comes from the
Arecibo Observatory. Read information on
SETI@Home. |
| The science of space is the main interest for me. I find the concepts behind
our knowledge completely overwhelming as they are dealing with vast quantities of space - the bounds
of which we don't really know. The Earth in itself is a fascinating planet which we know very little
about considering the wealth it has to offer. Little is known about how Nature's powerful storms and
how we can give people forewarning of their path of destruction, earthquakes are still unpredictable
and much, much more. |
| Why then do I think that venturing into space is important? I think that learning
about space is a valuable pursuit to enable us to learn more about our world. Studying the moon gave us
insights into different substances, Jupiter is a set of laws to itself composed almost entirely of gases
and many more discoveries have been made. Imagine the discoveries if we could travel outside our solar
system. |
| The idea of Extra-Terrestrials has been commercialised so much that many people have
formed their own opinions on the matter so I will not try to influence yours. However, we already mix with
other species on this planet so new species means new knowledge. |
